Thanks to the heat waves that smoldered the Bay Area last week, we have started to brainstorm ways to look polished while staying as thinly clad as possible. And when the temperature is climbing into the 80s, nothing can be more daunting than getting into a stiff suit for the office. But this doesn’t mean that you should forego the suit altogether. Although suits are usually prim and proper attire, there are a myriad ways of styling a suit to make it both office-appropriate and weatherproof. Check out these four male style bloggers who are not afraid to break the “rules” when it comes to wearing suits.

1. Wear Denim in your Suit

Although prepsters are not usually known for being rebels, the blog, Unabashedly Prep, features a bevy of men who dare to wear the often mismatched blazer + jeans combination. As Vanity Fair writer David Foxley shows us by styling slim denim with the jacket from his cotton gabardine suit, this outfit can still make you look like you are ready to get down to serious business.

Styling Tips: The key to pulling off this look is to find a perfectly-fitted pair of jeans and blazer. You can mix and match separates in different colors, as long as they are neutral colors (black, navy, gray, or white blazers with dark denim, khakis, or wool trousers). If you really want to “fake” a suit, your best bet is to pair a navy blazer with dark denim. For more details, see this previous post.

2. Shortchange your suit, but not your style

Wearing shorts with your suit jacket is a bit of controversial suggestion, given that a certain gentleman has decried the notion of wearing shorts (besides on the tennis court and at the beach) at all. But Travis Gumbs and Joshua Kissi of Street Etiquette prove that you shouldn’t follow rules (especially stodgy ones) all the time. They style fitted shorts with equally fitted blazers, pocket squares, and leather dress shoes, making their shorts completely appropriate for the office, the city, and wherever else you hang.

Styling Tips: Do we even need to repeat that you should strive for a trim silhouette when wearing a suit? Wear tailored shorts with tailored blazers. And forget wearing socks - shorts look better with ankles in commando.

3. Forget the Suit, But not the Tie

The boys of The MidWeStyle work formal elements such as suspenders and ties into their casual outfits so effortlessly that you barely register the oddity of wearing them without a suit. In the picture above, Jeff and his friend Oliver layer cardigans, down sweaters, and utility jackets over their ties, but the visible five inches (or so) of their ties show some thought to their dress.

Styling Tips: For a casual yet polished look, take measures to prevent your tie from flopping around. In the summer, tuck your tie underneath a vest or a thin cardigan. If you prefer your tie to be more conspicuous, secure it with a tie clip.

4. Kick it up a Notch

Picture
Some readers might have been confused when Dan Trepanier of The Style Blogger dubbed the suit and sneaker as the “ultimate go-anywhere outfit.” But after seeing his interpretations of the unlikely combination, we are confused as to why men don’t sport this look more often.

Styling Tips: You don’t want your sneakers to clash with your suit nor draw unwanted attention, so go for sneakers in a simple design and slim silhouette. You can’t go wrong with a low-top sneaker in leather, canvas, or suede. The Style Blogger chose Nikes, Vans, and Chucks, but Adidas and Superaga would work as well. And though the suit and sneakers can be an outfit appropriate for many occasions, don’t make like Russell Simmons and throw on your kicks for a glamorous soiree or a boardroom meeting. Exercise your judgment and always, always, always dress for the occasion.

Yes - this will be the last ....for  a while about mens suits. But I would be remiss if I didn't mention ....

THE TRENDS!!: The 3-Piece Is BACK! Double Breasted Blazers! Blue Is The New Black! Plaid Ties! Flirty Bow Ties!

Let's Talk About You:

Slim Jim: A blazer, a vest, slacks - very typical of English fashion. It says "confident without cocky". Try a fitted three piece or even a sac suit. Sometimes guys try to look bigger or more muscular if they get the size bigger or add layers to their 'look'. Just because you are slender doesnt mean you need to add bulk with your clothes. Try a double-breasted, box cut or (if you dare) a striped blazer, if you want to add poundage. Colors or color blocking with lines can also help. Explore roasted oranges, perky sage greens or dirty greys for the shirt underneath or trench on top.

Athletic Anthony: Blazer: try a European cut like Shipley and Halmos. These cuts are designed to emphasized the chest - perfect, since you've been working out like a maniac.  They often have a nipped waist, making your worked out look, work for you.

Extra Bulk Bill: Try for a simple matt blue, two or three button fitted (yes, fitted) blazer to look leaner. For added spoof - go for the one with the satin or velvet lapels drawing the eye upwards away from any place you don't want people to look:). A two vent by billy reid or those with a caboose in the back, a one vent Americana. Flat front pants create that smooth look - yes, even guys with large thighs and large behinds:).

Elevate You: Here are easy ways to elevate your own style whichever you choose.

1. Boutineers - they are kind of like brooches, but for guys. Choose anything that represents you and your personality. You like bowling? Try a pin. You like to go hunting? Try some antlers on for size. You like snowboarding, pin up a broken boot buckle or even your locker keys! Remember folks- style is working within the confines of YOU - and only you.

2. Plaid - go to the tailor and tell them you want them to sew in some plaid fabric - most tailors have some remnant fabric leftover so if any at all, it will cost you zero dinero. Bring a tie, some old slides, an old shirt and tell them to sew the plaid on the tip of the tie,  into the tongue of the shoe, the cuff of the shirt. These are easy trend fixes guys, that will save you money and energy.

3. Raid the closet! If girls can do it, so can you! Bring out your dad's old double breasted blazer and ask the tailor to take it in. Granted, if your dad and you aren't within two sizes of each other, it will be hard to do. Alternative: Get this cardigan by Diesel (below) seen at www.SSense.com or buy the American Apparel jersey version of the double breasted navy blazer here - its warm for the winter and super comfortable.

Kanye West is known for a lot of things - music, fashion trends, faux-pas, "foot in the mouth" situations and just plain craziness. I love his new fashion commitment though - check it out:

THE ROSEWOOD MOVEMENT according to Hood Nerd.com:

"The Rosewood Movement is a fashion initiative in which Kanye and his group wear the same sharply tailored suits. It stems from the Rosewood Civil Rights Movement, but in this case is meant to raise the level of sophistication within the rap and hip hop worlds. Kanye is known to be a fashion trend setter, so this is meant to influence his followers to dress a bit sharper. The current dress code is a Dior Homme Black Classic Skinny Suit (as seen on West in this photo). It is sold in Beverly Hills and New York City boutiques and retails for $2,200. It is available during every season."

So what's next for guys? Yep - probably ...."THE SUIT" - and not just for the holidays.

So guys, do you know your neck size, arm length ....how about chest size?

Next up? Kanye wears Lanvin and Phillip Lim - is this right for you? Let's talk about what brands you should look out for - for YOUR body type.

Nothing looks better than a man in a suit. I know you've heard that before! Some people like men in uniforms, others in suits. There is something about the structure, the fabric....but mostly the FIT. If the suit doesn't fit, it's like looking at a train wreck waiting to happen. I know you've seen people talking down the street - afraid they might trip on all that extra fabric they have around the legs or perhaps flash someone in the eye by how shiny the suit is ....or maybe you've seen the type who waits for the flood gates to open (pants too high).

Seriously - if you take the time to put it on....[after the complaints of "I dont have one", "Why do I have to wear this clown suit?" or "Do I really need to match the blazer and pants?"] you probably need to finally give in and either get a new one or at the least tailor the one you have. Every ONE (both men and women) need to have at least one good suit in their closet.

This will be the first of 3 more parts in the series about THE SUIT.

Part 1: Definition of a Suit and "Why wear one - I don't have that kind of job!"
Part 2: The Fit
Part 3: Putting it together with Flare
