In light of the complaints over the “Brillo pad effect” heard at the last Style Tastings event, it is only fitting that this latest Alternative Grooming installment is dedicated to the question of “to shave or not to shave your chest hair?” Men should definitely have a maintenance routine when their chest hair grows too unruly; you don’t want to be unleashing the beast beneath on occasions when you will be wearing an unbuttoned dress shirt in the office on Casual Fridays, a v-neck shirt on the weekends, or nothing at the beach. Of course, men should tame their chest hair in whichever way they feel comfortable. But the problem for men with girlfriends is that the fairer sex does not like you taking a razor to your chest. Or specifically, they will bristle when your chest stubble ends up scratching their skin in the sack. Sure, your girlfriend will be appeased when your stubble will eventually grow into softer hair. But in the meantime, there is no product you can use to soften your stubble, which means that keeping your chest shorn at all times could become a daily ordeal.
So before you opt for full-on chest hair removal again the next time your chest comes to resemble Chewbaca, consider trimming. The benefits of trimming in comparison to razing are manifold. First, trimming won’t be nearly as time-consuming as razing your chest hair to prevent reappearances of stubble. Second, pruning your chest hair requires only a pair of haircutting or moustache-trimming scissors (try this
one). Last, trimming is a foolproof technique with little room for adverse effects while shaving allows for the possibility of razor burn, irritated skin, and ingrown hairs. And why consider resorting to complete hair removal at all? It is expected that you will groom yourself when you start to look like a feral animal, but it is also expected that you as a man will have body hair. So simply treat chest hair like the hair on your head –give it a trim when needed.
What is your personal maintenance routine when it comes to chest hair? Do you take it all off?
